There’s something sacred about places that remind you how small you are.
The Galápagos Islands do that the moment you arrive, a cluster of volcanic rocks in the middle of the Pacific, alive with creatures that don’t flinch at the sight of you. Sea lions sunbathe on benches, and giant tortoises move with patience.
Every island feels different.
Santa Cruz is lively, with open-air cafés and local markets. Isabela is slower, long, empty beaches, dirt roads, and sunsets that pull you to the edge of the water. Española feels untouched, dramatic cliffs and wind strong enough to steal your hat, but you don’t care because the views are unreal.
The islands move at their own pace. And being there reminds you to do the same. No corras tanto. La vida no es una carrera.

Of all the islands in the Galápagos, Santa Cruz stayed with me the most.
It’s not the quietest or the wildest — but it’s where everything came together. The rhythm, the people, the colors, the smell of salt in the air. It felt alive in a way that made me feel present.
My mornings on Santa Cruz were slow, coffee at a little corner café, the same spot every day, watching the town wake up. Locals setting up shop, travelers headed to the docks, and the smell of espresso mixing with ocean air.
It reminded me of small towns back home in Mexico, where time feels elastic, and you can sit for an hour just being.
People greet you here with warmth. “Buenos días” and a smile that feels genuine. There’s a calmness to island life that seeps into you without trying.

At night, everything softens. The light fades, the ocean breeze cools the air, and the sounds of laughter and music float through the streets.
I’d grab a beer, sit by the water, and watch the boats sway under the moonlight. Nothing fancy, just real moments that make you feel alive and grateful.
Santa Cruz reminded me that adventure doesn’t always have to be extreme. Sometimes it’s found in the simple things: slow mornings, good coffee, conversations with strangers, the sound of the ocean at night.
It’s the kind of place that brings you back to yourself.
Más despacio. Más presente. Más viva.
